GASLIGHTING: What it is & How It Messes With Your Mind | Dr. Rami Nader

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse in which a person tries to manipulate you into doubting your perceptions, experiences or understanding of events. At its core, gaslighting as a form of manipulation, causing you to question your judgment and sense of reality. Gaslighting can occur in a number of different types of relationships, including romantic relationships, friendships, child/parent relationships, coworker relationships and in institutions. As a result of the manipulative and abusive characteristics of gaslighting, it can lead to a number of psychological signs and symptoms, including: you constantly second-guess yourself; you feel vulnerable and insecure in the relationship; you dwell on perceived character flaws; you believe that people view you as unstable or crazy; you mistrust your judgment; you feel confused about your relationship; you find yourself having arguments that you did not intend to have; you feel confused about who you are and what you believe; you’re constantly apologizing; you feel inadequate; you frequently make excuses for the other person’s behaviour; you feel generally unhappy in life, but don’t understand why; and you feel an impending sense of doom. By understanding some of the signs and symptoms of gaslighting, it can help you identify if you are in an abusive relationship in which you are being gaslit.
