Safety behaviours are anything that a person does in order to help themselves feel safer, without having any substantial impact on actually making them any safer. Safety behaviours are a key factor that fuel and maintain anxiety disorders and it is important to target and address safety behaviours when treating different anxiety conditions such as Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Specific Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Health Anxiety. The problem with safety behaviours is that they maintain anxiety by preventing a person from knowing what is actually safe and powering anxiety-provoking beliefs that danger is all around. By engaging in safety behaviours, people are fuelling and maintaining their anxiety without even knowing it, by behaving as if there is something to be fearful of, even if that is not actually the case. The key point to remember with safety behaviours is that not everything that makes a person feel safe is actually keeping them safe.
